There's no single 'best' home charger — the right one depends on your car, your switchboard and how much you value app features versus simplicity. Frequently asked questions
Do I need a 22kW charger?
Only if your car's onboard AC charger can use it (commonly up to 11kW or 22kW on three phase) and you have a three phase supply. Most single-phase homes are limited to 7.4kW regardless of the charger's rating.
Is a tethered cable better than a socketed charger?
Tethered is more convenient day to day. Socketed chargers let you use your own cable and can look tidier, but you need to store a cable in the car.
Can I install the charger myself?
No — home EV charger circuits must be installed and certified by a licensed electrician to AS/NZS 3000.
Does a beachside location change which charger I should pick?
It can. If the unit will live in an open carport or on an exposed wall near the water, prioritise outdoor rating and enclosure quality over app features, and plan a sheltered mounting position. Inside a garage, exposure is much less of a factor.
Should I choose a solar-aware charger in Adelaide?
It's worth considering if you already have rooftop solar and the car is home during the day. If the car is only ever charged overnight, a simpler scheduled charger on a cheaper overnight window may suit you better.
